Melasti ritual this year will take place on Friday March 28, 2014, three days before Nyepi Day. The purpose of the Melasti ritual is to cleanse the spiritual, the environment, and the universe of all the negative energy before Nyepi day is done. Hindus do worship at the beach with the aim to purify ourselves of all the bad things in the past and throw it into the sea before making four types of fasting when Nyepi Day. Or to put it more simply, Melasti have meaning to purify the world and humans. World is the earth and its contents, the human body is visible and spiritual.

Typically, the implementation of the Melasti ritual performed on the beach. But in some places, which are located far to the beach, the Melasti ritual performed in a lake, river or other springs are considered holy. In addition to attending a prayer, Melasti is also the cleaning and purification of sacred objects belonging to the temple.
